Newfoundland’s rocky soil was generally
regarded as not very suitable for agriculture but suitable for the rapid growth for spruce and fir. Because Newfoundland
was heavily dependant on the North American mainland for its food products, Newfoundland developed large scale
farming on the west coast where the use of fertilizer enhanced the growth of the traditional root crops, potatoes, turnip and carrots.
Use of modern machinery such as bulldozers for clearing land and potato digging machines assured efficient use of land resources.
