"Battery Residents Protest"
A group of citizens from the Battery are protested Wednesday to save their beloved wharf. The wooden wharf is blocked by a sign "No Trespassing ," and a small blue-trimmed fishing boat is tied to the end of the wharf, a small piece of history. The chair of the Outer Battery Neighbourhood Association, Chris Brooks, says around 8:15am Wednesday two contractors from the city said they were going to tear down the old wharf. Charlie Piercey, who owns the fishing stage next to the wharf, says this is the last of the old fishing community, a piece of heritage from five generations back. Piercey says council's move to tear down the wharf is ridiculous.
The Director of Engineering and Planning, Dave Blackmore, says contractors have been hired to do the job today. He says they're removing a newer walkway and surface that has been built over the old wharf because it's completely unsafe and has been contructed without a permit or approval. It has left a bitter taste in the mouths of residents who feel the small wharf is a part of the area's history. One woman feels the city is destroying her neighbourhood and creating a slum
